Evangelical Leader Jerry Falwell Jr. Taking ‘Indefinite Leave of Absence’ From Liberty University After His Underwear Picture Goes Viral
Liberty University — a Christian college in Lynchburg, Virginia — announced that President and Chancellor of Liberty University Jerry Falwell Jr. is taking an “indefinite leave of absence” after he posted (and later deleted) a picture (below) on Instagram that showed him with his arm around a woman with their zippers down on a yacht:
The Executive Committee of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees, acting on behalf of the full Board, met today and requested that Jerry Falwell, Jr. take an indefinite leave of absence from his roles as President and Chancellor of Liberty University, to which he has agreed, effective immediately.
Falwell told WLNI, a Lynchburg radio station, that he has “apologized to everybody” about the picture with his “wife’s assistant,” which was “just in good fun”:
She’s pregnant, so she couldn’t get her pants up. And I had on pair of jeans that I hadn’t worn in a long time so I couldn’t get mine zipped either. And so I just put my belly out like hers. She’s a sweetheart and I should never have put it up and embarrassed her.
Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC), who used to teach at Liberty University, called on Falwell to resign on Aug. 6.
Jerry Falwell Jr’s ongoing behavior is appalling.— Rep. Mark Walker (@RepMarkWalker) August 6, 2020
As a Music Faculty Advisory Board Member and former instructor @LibertyU, I’m convinced Falwell should step down.
None of us are perfect, but students, faculty, alumni and @LUPraise deserve better.
