Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Costing Taxpayers Nearly $20 Million For Armed Security
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos costs taxpayers millions of dollars because of her 24/7 security from the U.S. Marshals Service.
NBC News notes that the security detail for the billionaire cost taxpayers $5.3 million in 2017, $6.8 million in 2018 and an estimated $7.74 million in 2019, for a total of $19.84 million.
Cabinet secretaries usually get security arranged by internal enforcement units in their departments, but DeVos has had this unusual protection arrangement since she was greeted by hecklers on Feb. 10, 2017, while trying and failing to visit Jefferson Academy in Washington D.C.
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions granted the expensive protection on February 13, 2017.
The U.S. Marshals Service refused to comment on this huge expenditure paid for by taxpayers.
