The Dr. Phil Show is accused of providing free vodka backstage to an alcoholic, Todd Herzog, to ensure that Herzog would be drunk on the air.
Herzog told STAT News and the Boston Globe that hen he arrived at the Los Angeles studio he was not drunk, but found that someone had left a bottle of Smirnoff vodka in his dressing room.
Herzog said he drank the bottle, and someone working for the show gave him a Xanax to “calm his nerves.”
Guests on the Dr. Phil Show have allegedly been left without medical care as they face withdrawal from drugs, STAT News and the Boston Globe report, and have been directed where they could buy drugs in Los Angeles.
Dr. Phil McGraw declined an interview request. Martin Greenberg, a psychologist who is the show’s director of professional affairs, claimed that guests have never been provided alcohol or directed to where to buy drugs.
However, “one guest bought heroin with the knowledge and support of show staff, according to a family member. Another guest, who was pregnant, was filmed by a show staffer while searching for a dealer on Skid Row in L.A.,” note STAT News and the Boston Globe.
McGraw holds a doctorate in psychology, but has not been a licensed psychologist since 2006.
