A group of 26 Texas lawmakers — Democrats and Republicans — are calling on Republican Gov. Greg Abbott (who claims to be “pro-life”) to stop the Nov. 20 execution of Rodney Reed, a black man who has spent over 20 years on death row for the 1996 rape and murder of a 19-year-old white woman, Stacey Stites, with whom Reed was having an affair, reports Democracy Now.
More than 1.4 million people — including Kim Kardashian West, Rihanna and Meek Mill — have signed an online petition to save Reed’s life.
After Reed’s trial, Stites’s former fiancee, a white police officer named Jimmy Fennell, was later thrown in jail on kidnapping and rape charges stemming from another criminal case.
A convict, who spent time in jail with Fennell, signed an affidavit in October 2019 claiming that Fennell admitted to killing Stites because she was having an affair with a black man (Reed).
