Catholic Cardinal Donald Wuerl Shamed In Front Of His Congregation For Sex Abuse Scandal

Churchgoers interrupted the Archbishop of Washington, D.C., Cardinal Donald Wuerl, on Sept. 2 as he pleaded with parishioners to stay loyal to Pope Francis amid revelations of the Pennsylvania clergy sex abuse scandal.

One churchgoer yelled “Shame on you!” and walked out, while another turned her back on Wuerl.

There have been calls for Wuerl to resign since a grand jury report revealed abuses that occurred while he was head of the Pittsburgh diocese.

Penn Live notes that Wuerl allegedly tried to keep victims silent. Wuerl asked the church congregation to forgive his “errors in judgment” and “inadequacies,” which may amount to criminal acts.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano claims Wuerl knew about sexual abuse committed by Theodore McCarrick, but Wuerl insists he was unaware.
