U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are investigating one of their agents who ran over a Native American man with an SUV and drove away in Topawa, Arizona, on June 14.
Paulo Remes, a resident of the Tohono O’odham Nation who filmed the incident and got hit by the SUV, told the Arizona Daily Star that he was taken to the hospital with bruises:
I’m doing all right, I’m just a little sore, really. I ran into the dirt road in front of my house, because I know they’ll try and hit me. I think he saw me on the landline and didn’t think I was recording. What I think he did was turn on the sirens to get away from the scene of the crime.
The Tohono O’odham Nation described the video as “disturbing.”
A rep for U.S. Customs and Border Protection told BuzzFeed News that it is “actively investigating this incident” and “fully cooperating with the Tohono O’odham Police Department as they investigate.”
