A black woman, Vanity Allen, was tackled and bloodied by a security guard at the SSM Health DePaul Hospital in Bridgeton in July.
Newly-released surveillance video of the assault shows Allen walking outside the hospital, where she came for stomach pain, notes the Riverfront Times.
Allen had an IV port installed when she walked outside for some fresh air. In pain, she sat down on a wheelchair outside the entrance, and was confronted by the guard.
Allen said she put up her hand to try to get the guard to back off because she was in severe pain. Allen claimed the guard hit her over her left eye, sending her into the sidewalk.
On the video, the guard appeared to grapple with Allen as she tried to catch her balance in the entrance. The guard dropped Allen to the ground, handcuffed her and dragged the 25-year-old woman into the hospital.
Allen’s lawyer, Albert Watkins, said the footage confirms what Allen has said:
This was 220 pounds of white daytime TV muscle on top of her. You have a security guard with an IQ well below room temperature taking it upon himself to see that “justice” is done to a 90-pound patient in distress.
It is our understanding that he has been relieved of his duties.
A spokeswoman for SSM Health DePaul Hospital said the hospital cannot discuss personnel matters.
SSM Health DePaul Hospital filed a police report against Allen, and she faces a municipal ordinance violation for fourth degree assault.
In a statement, the hospital said: “The Bridgeton Police Department investigated the matter, and we cooperated fully with their efforts.”
A spokesman for the Bridgeton Police Department said it has only forwarded the hospital’s complaint to prosecutors.
