Atlanta Cop Investigated For Punching Man, Shoving Man’s Mother Down

A police officer is being investigated after he was filmed punching a man and knocking the man’s mother down on the pavement during a drug arrest in Atlanta on July 9.

The police report claims that Harold Barnwell led a police officer on a car chase in which he hit another car, and then abandoned his vehicle, notes The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

While police searched for Barnwell, he came back to his car  and retrieved a red bag that contained “several bags of raw marijuana,” said the report.

On a cell phone video filmed by a witness, the officer orders Barnwell to put his hands behind his back.

The officer punched Barnwell who stumbles back towards his mother, Jennifer Barnwell, who tries to intervene. The officer pushes Jennifer to the ground.

Barnwell and the officer engage in a brief street fight before Barnwell is subdued by several officers.

The Atlanta Police Department issued a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

We are aware of the video and the complaint filed with our Office of Professional Standards. We will investigate the matter and take appropriate action if it is determined any departmental polices or procedures were not followed.
