Atlanta Charter School Celebrates Black History With Blackface Masks

Second-grade students made minstrel show masks to celebrate black history at the Kindezi Old Fourth Ward school in Atlanta on March 29.

Facebook user Semone Banks posted a Facebook video of the kids holding the masks in front of their faces, which caused outrage.

The Kindezi Schools responded on its Facebook page:

Kindezi Old Fourth Ward sincerely apologizes and accepts responsibility for the hurt, anger, frustration and disappointment caused by the poor judgement we made in having students use masks that mimic blackface while reciting Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s poem, We Wear the Mask at our Black History program Thursday night.
