Arkansas Republicans Working On Bill To Ban Abortion, Including Rape & Incest, Because Of Trump

Arkansas Republicans are ready to propose a near-total ban on abortions because President Donald Trump is expected to nominate an anti-abortion, right wing nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Arkansas law currently bans abortion past the 20th week of pregnancy.

Republican state Rep. Bob Ballinger told Arkansas Online that his bill would allow abortions only if the life of the mother is at risk, but would force women and girls to give birth if they are the victims of rape or incest.

Republican state Rep. Sen. Trent Garner has issued his support.

ACLU Arkansas President Rita Sklar responded in an email to Arkansas Online:

With Justice Kennedy’s retirement, the future of Roe v. Wade is definitely at risk. But Rep. Ballinger will have a hard time in Arkansas because most Arkansans oppose overturning Roe v. Wade, and none of us want to go back to the days when women were forced into childbirth, or died in back alley abortions.

The Arkansas Legislature will not meet until the 2019 regular session, when Ballinger hopes to run his bill.

Ballinger said an Arkansas law banning abortion would likely cause a legal challenge that could cause the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973.

Ballinger seemed to also hope that the gay marriage ruling by the high court might be overturned as well:

It’s only because of Obergefell that our state law and constitutional amendment are not enforceable [against gay marriage].

Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas said he supported a reversal to Roe v. Wade that would allow states to decide on their own abortion laws.
