UPDATE: The woman in the video, Mia Irizarry, told Latino Rebels how she would have been arrested by the cop in the video had she been the aggressor:
When we watch these types of videos, we always say that we would react differently on how we would handle the situation. But in that moment, after calling for help, I realized that if I reacted aggressively, I would have been criminalized.
I want people to realize that racism is very much alive and we need to do better as a country.
I had never expected that something like that could happen to me. It’s definitely made me more cautious. But now I get to empathize with a new group of people.
An angry racist man yelled at Mia Irizarry for wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt at the Caldwell Forest Preserve in Chicago on June 14, even though Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory.
Irizarry tried to explain to the man and a police officer that she had reserved the picnic table area for her birthday from 7am to 7pm, but the man continued to harass Irizarry in full view of the police:
If you’re an American citizen, why are you wearing that sh*t! If you’re an American citizen, you should not be wearing that shirt in America… The world is not going to change the United States of America, period!
The police officer refused multiple times to intervene.
Fortunately, a male bystander confronted the man and got him to stop harassing Irizarry while the cop watched.
