Adults Are Buying Human Breast Milk in Hopes It Will Keep Coronavirus Away
Adults are buying breast milk in hopes that it fends of the deadly coronavirus, which has killed over 25,000 Americans.
Milk sellers told The Daily Beast there has seen an increase in people trying to purchase breast milk to supposedly boost their immunity against the coronavirus.
The idea is mothers make antibodies that are passed down through their breast milk, which could supposedly fight the coronavirus.
Health experts do not support this notion, but the principle behind it is being studied by New York’s Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and by the University of California, San Diego.
Lars Bode, chair of Collaborative Human Milk Research at the University of California, San Diego, said the idea is “not too far-fetched”:
It’s an interesting idea. Maybe not the right thing to do for multiple different reasons.
