Thirteen prisoners died behind bars in Mississippi in August, compared to 47 prisoner deaths in the state for the entire year of 2015.
Prison officials claim the thirteen deaths were by natural causes, but family members and activists are calling for answers
One of the 13 deaths was 24- year-old Nija Syvallus Bonhomme who died at the privately-run Wilkinson County Correctional Center.
Officials said that Bonhomme died in his cell after a fight with another prisoner, but his sister told Democracy Now that officials knowingly placed her brother in a dangerous situation after a prior prison fight:
They threw him back to the dogs.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is part of a lawsuit against Mississippi Department of Corrections for alleged abuses of prisoner rights.
